What's So Great About Nature?

Did you know that today, kids that are between the ages of eight and eighteen spend over seven hours a day on some kind of entertainment or media device? The result of all of this television watching, video game playing, and web surfing is children spending over fifty hours a week behind some kind of screen! At Camp Half Moon, our campers are encouraged to spend more time outside and to reconnect with nature. While it is easier to get children outside at a summer camp near New Hampshire, like us, spending time outside the rest of the year is just as important and more difficult to do! But, keeping them mentally and physically active while at home doesn’t have to be so hard. Keep on reading for some tips, as well as benefits, of children spending time in nature!

  • Did you know that children who spend more time outside have better eyesight than those who spend more time inside? Studies show that when a child spends time away from a cell phone, computer, or TV screen, and instead go outside, they are less likely to develop myopia. For those who don’t know, myopia is nearsightedness. And an easy way to avoid that is to play and spend time outside more than you do inside!   • More and more children are showing symptoms of a small attention span as well as ADHD. By spending time in nature, it naturally increases a child’s attention span. Many studies show that when you expose your child to the outdoors, whether it is after school or on the weekend, it is known to be exceptionally effective in lowering ADHD symptoms. 
  • One of the most important vitamins, Vitamin D, has become a very common vitamin deficiency within children and adults. Vitamin D is important because it helps the body fight to off infections, prevent various diseases, maintain strong bones, and lowers the risks of developing, cancers, diabetes, and more. The easiest way to get this necessary vitamin is to just spend more time outside in the sun! One of the great benefits of summer camp is spending an amazing summer outside in the sun and nature.
