When’s the Best Time to Have A Retreat?

Here at Camp Half Moon, we have tons of experience with holding and planning retreats. Our Berkshires retreat facility has held various retreats and conferences for businesses and organizations in the past. Also, we are a great source for any questions you might have during the planning process. Speaking of questions, one of the most common ones that we receive is, "when is the best time to hold a retreat?" And each season has its benefits and drawbacks, so keep on reading to learn more!

  • Summer: Having a retreat in summer isn't usually the most common time. Since a lot of retreat facilities are also summer camps, there is often not a lot of facilities open. Also, if the facility is open in the summer, it was commonly booked a year or two in advance, therefore lacking availability. But the great thing about a summer retreat is the availability of activities. There's everything from canoeing, kayaking, sports, outdoor adventures, and more to choose from. Plus, there is way less of a risk of having to canceling due snow or extreme weather.
  • Fall & Spring: The most common time to hold a retreat is during the transition seasons. During fall, Camp Half Moon is covered in beautiful changing leaves and it's usually just the right temperature. Then during the spring, the snow is finally gone from the harsh winter months, the flowers are beginning to bloom, and the weather is beginning to get warmer. A majority of activities are offered during these seasons. We recommend scheduling these retreats about 8-12 months in advance.
  • Winter: Even though it's a little cold, Camp Half Moon covered in snow is a beautiful winter wonderland. Retreats in the winter shouldn't depend on doing any outdoor activities due to the cold weather and chance of snow. But for those retreats that will primarily be indoors, winter is the perfect opportunity. The main risk associated with a retreat in the winter is the chance of having to cancel due to snow.
